Today I ran into an annoying issue – iPhone won’t install drivers on Windows 7. This one was bugging me for awhile so I figured I’d paste the resolution. It wasn’t very difficult but tracking down the answer was.
I had my iPhone plugged into my USB port on my computer while installing ITunes, thought that might have messed it up but I don’t think it did. I tried a fresh install without the device plugged in, and Windows still couldn’t find the drivers.
The solution was to extract the files from the ITunes setup.exe file that you download from Apple. You’ll see the MSI files in the folder, and from there you need to extract the drivers from the AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi (if on a 64-bit system). Use the program Less MSIerables or equivalent to extract the files from the MSI file.
Then plug your phone in, and your computer should find the drivers (if in searchable location), otherwise go to your Device Manager and right click –> Properties and install the drivers from there. You’ll need to point the driver wizard to the location of the usbaapl64.inf file.
***UPDATE***
For Windows 7 Ultimate, I found the above fix didn’t work like it did on Windows 7 Professional. For Ultimate, you need to download the Media Feature Pack from Microsoft for the iPhone to show up as a device in Windows Explorer. The link to get this is below:
